Why “Clean” Skincare Is Bullsh!t

Let's talk about the buzzwords flying around in the skincare world right now. Everyone's obsessed with terms like "clean," "non-toxic," "pore-clogging," and "acne-safe." It's all I hear. But here's the thing—these words are often just part of a clever marketing gimmick.

The Misconceptions Around "Clean" Skincare

The Clean Beauty Myth

One of the myths is that "clean" skincare equals better skincare. The reality is that most effective skincare products are not 100% "clean." This doesn't make them bad; it makes them scientifically effective. Some of these ingredients are crucial for making noticeable changes in your skin. Sure, we'd all love to have the best of both worlds—a skincare routine that's both effective and free of controversial ingredients. But achieving real results may mean including components that might not be labeled as "clean."

Beware of Greenwashing

And here's another thing to watch out for—greenwashing. With the popularity of "clean" skincare, many brands are jumping on the bandwagon, launching tallow-based or other "natural" products that claim to be miraculous. But not all of these brands prioritize quality. Some are just out to make a quick buck, skimping on quality ingredients and using marketing buzzwords to lure you in.

The Truth About Effective Skincare

Effective, results-driven skincare usually contains ingredients that might contradict these so-called "clean" standards. You need those specific ingredients to make noticeable changes in your skin. That said, there's always a spectrum—good, better, best. We're all striving for the best skincare options with the least harmful or toxic ingredients.

The Myth of 100% Natural Skincare

If you're dead set on using products that are 100% natural, they do exist. The intention behind these products is great, but personally, I've found them lacking in effectiveness.

Now, don't get me wrong—this is based on my personal experience and what works for my skin (and most of my clients), but there are probably tons of people who swear by tallow-based products, and that's great! I love that we have more natural options available. But, there's a catch….

The Pore-Clogging Issue

Tallow products do tend to clog pores. More importantly, as these products gain popularity, we're seeing more brands jump on the tallow bandwagon purely for profit. They're using greenwashing tactics to market their products as "clean" and "all-natural," even when the quality isn't up to par.

Skincare is deeply personal, and what works for one person might not work for another. But don't get swept away by the "clean" skincare craze. Effective skincare sometimes requires ingredients that don't fit into the "clean" category, and that's okay. Focus on finding the best options with the least harmful ingredients.
